ORKNEY NORN REVIVAL PROJECT is supporting research in Orkney Norn and use of Orkney Dialect.

The chance that the language will ever comeback to Orkney is very small, but Orkney Norn is a linguistic heritage of the islands and the study may help to preserve place names, Orkney dialect, interest in Nordic languages and connections.

At early stages of the project we're interested in prsentation of an available information about the language and also applications of Orkney Norn in art projects, graphic design and local slang

JAMES HESFORD :
AFTER 200 YEARS SINGING IN NORN AGAIN
orkney norn

Composer James Hesford's work “Papay Holm” was performed by the baroque choir Fiori Musicali in a reconstructed ancient language of Orkney Nynorn during Felcino Bianco Festival in Citerna Italy in July 2010.

Text is a chart for wind and sea - used to describe what happens when the wind blows.... One is related to land the other the sea...

We'd like to bring this work home, in Orkney, performed at Papay Holm, Ring of Brodgar and St. Magnus Cathedral

NYNORN IN ART INSTALLATION
papa westray
During PICNIC10 in Papay, Nynorn text describing a wind chart and sea was used in installation "Sjuen ir ens og glerlek". Text is written in waterbased paint /marble dust and rabbit skin glue/ and will be washed away with a few tides reflecting on the state of Orkney Norn which still can be traced in Orkney dialect but is getting washed away year by year

PAPEY HOLM
Nynorn text:

Då vinden ferder en mil on timen - lygn.
Sjuen ir ens og glerlek.

Ir ferden en til tru mil on timen - fliro.
Kirrkarr veð fyribyrþ av raitler myntast
men uten skumkambar.

Veð fyre til seks - grå.
Smubårer enn stuttar, min mere tøtligar.
Bårekambar glereter og kraga ikke.

Veð åtta til tolv - litið lot - sturar smubårer,
bårekambar byrra at kraga, skum gleret,
kanske dunkande vit ross.

Veð tretten til sjøtjen - anduvsgrå.
Bårer vaksa, tiþ vit ross.

Veð åtjen til tuttu fyre – køl –
Størri bårer ið gerast tøtligare
Marg vit ross myntast. Kast fyri spri.

English text:

When the wind is traveling at one mile per hour – calm
The Sea is like a mirror

At speeds of one to three miles per hour – light air
Ripples with the appearance of scales (fish scales) are formed
But without foam crests

At four to six – a light breeze
Small wavelets, still short, but more pronounced.
Crests have a glassy appearance and do not break.

At eight to twelve – a gentle breeze – large wavelets,
Crests begin to break, foam of glassy appearance,
Perhaps scattered white horses.

At thirteen to seventeen – a moderate breeze.
Small waves, becoming larger; fairly frequent white horses

At eighteen to twenty-four – a fresh breeze –
Moderate waves, taking a more pronounced long form
many white horses are formed. Chance of some spray
